Signaline FT-EN is approved by UL to EN54 part 28 as a non-resettable linear heat detector. It is Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) and is available in either 68°C, 78°C or 88°C alarm temperatures.
The line-type heat detection cable outer coating is made from a UV and chemical resistant compound making the cable suitable for even the harshest of environments.
Signaline FT-78-EN and Signaline FT-88-EN linear heat detectors are now approved for enviornmental group III – the highest environmental classification for EN54 part 28.
Signaline FT-EN Linear heat detection is also available with optional stainless steel outer coating for increased mechanical protection. It can also be supplied with catenary wire for easy installation where direct mounting is not possible.
Signaline FT-EN is used with the Signaline LocatorPlus-EN and FT-EOL-EN to make a complete EN54 part 28 approved system.
Frequently asked questions
Is Linear Heat Detection approved?
Yes! Signaline FT-EN is approved to EN54 part 2 by UL EU.
It is also approved by UAE Civil Defense and is the only ActivFire-approved linear heat detector on the market.
You can download copies of all our approval certificates.
What components do I need for a Linear Heat Detection system?
Linear Heat Detector systems use a line-type heat detection cable which is monitored by a front end controller and terminated in an end of line box.
Signaline FT-EN is made up of the LocatorPlus-EN, a choice of FT-68-EN, FT-78-EN, FT-88-EN detection cable and the FT-EOL-EN unit.
There is no minimum length of cable required. Furthermore, the LocatorPlus-EN and FT-EOL-EN are capable of monitoring two zones of cable. Therefore, if site allows, you can use one LocatorPlus-EN and one FT-EOL-EN for two lengths of detection cable.
How do I test Linear Heat Detection?
Linear Heat Detection forms part of a building’s life safety equipment and therefore regular testing is essential. Functional testing can be performed by using a suitable heating element on the line-type detection cable to simulate an alarm.
For Signaline FT-EN, testing can also be performed by opening the FT-EOL-EN unit and pressing the test switch.
If live heat testing is performed, the tested section will need to be replaced.
Which clip should I use to secure Linear Heat Detection?
The correct choice of clip depends on the specific enviornment, mounting surface and local regulations in which the linear heat detection is being used.
For EN54 approved solutions the cable should always be mounted with a metal fixing clip that allows a 20mm drop from the fixing surface. This allows air-flow around the line-type heat detector and ensures quick activation in an alarm event.
Specialist clips are necessary for use in specific environments, such as floating roof tanks and cable trays.
When there is no easy mounting surface e.g. due to non-flat surfaces or apexed roofs, consider the use of a catenary wire solution.

Can I use Linear Heat Detection in the Hazardous Area?
For electrical equipment to be used within a designated Hazard Area the items should be certified safe for use. This is normally done by encapsulating the electronics inside a Flame Proof enclosure or ensuring the power consumption is below a minimum threshold to not be an ignition risk (Intrinsically Safe).
Many Linear Heat Detectors are defined as Simple Apparatus. This means, by themselves they do not have the electrical energy to be an ignition source.
Simple Apparatus can be used within the hazardous area, and this is the case for Signaline Linear Heat Detectors.
For more information please review our guide for hazardous areas
What is the minimum and maximum zone length for Linear Heat Detection?
The minimum and maximum zone length for Linear Heat Detection will depend on the approval of the line-type heat detector and the local regulation.
En54 part 22 approved systems are limited to 500m per zone and require a minimum of 50m.
En54 part 28 approved systems are limited to 1000m per zone and have no minimum length.
UL, cUL and FM approved systems are limited to 3000m per zone and have no minimum length.
What reel lengths are available?
Signaline Linear Heat Detection cable is sold in 50 metre lengths, so the minimum order is 50 metres.
We offer reels in 50-metre steps—such as 50m, 100m, 150m, and so on—up to 500 metres for FT-EN.
