Signaline is on a mission – We are determined to detect any heat, anywhere, but we are also determined to reduce our ecological impact.
Therefore, we have been ruthlessly eliminating our plastic packaging.
When we launched the Q clip in 2023 our design brief was to remove the requirement for plastic tie wraps when securing Signaline Linear Heat Detection while ensuring compliance with the EN54 installations standards.
Target set; target hit. But then we realized we were scoring a massive own goal by packaging them in a plastic bags!
Time to wake up and get this sorted!
And we are now pleased to announce that all our clips will be supplied in recycled and fully recyclable cardboard containers and not plastic bags.
Glad to have got that sorted we then took aim at the linear heat detector itself. Often supplied to our customers on toughened plastic pallets we needed to remove the usage of plastic here too.
Simple – switch from plastic to wooden pallets, right?
Wrong! Did you know that 25m cubic metres virgin wood is used for pallet manufacturing each year in Europe alone! This removes a vital carbon sink and food source from the wild.
So the search was on to find a pallet that is tough enough to ensure safe delivery of Signaline Linear Heat Detection to our customers, but with the lightest environmental footprint…..And we may have just found it!
All palletised deliveries will now be on recycled and fully recyclable presswood pallets. And why are these so good I hear you ask?
100% recycled wood
100% recyclable
Zero glues, chemicals etc.
Stackable reducing shipping space and therefore CO2 emissions
ISPM15 compliant – Because presswood pallets are moulded under enormous pressure at a very high temperature, they do not need to conform to the strict ISPM 15 regulations which make them a good choice for export
Old plastic pallets will be phased outReplacement Pressedwood pallets which are fully recyclable
Why stop there!
Our next step will be the removal of all instructions manuals from Signaline products. That’s right – installers will now need to guess how to program a Signaline LocatorPlus or how to assemble a Signaline UCB into a junction box.
Don’t worry – just kidding!
We will be replacing all manuals with QR codes allowing instant access to all our manuals from anywhere in the world and reducing our paper and printing consumption and thereby our ecological footprint.
We will be making the above transitions from the 1st September 2024 so you may receive the odd ‘bag’ of clips or a non-recyclable pallet still. Ultimately it is better for the planet we use up what we already have than just chuck it out but after this period all orders will be received with 100% recycled and recyclable cardboard packaging and pallets.
So the choice is simple. Not only can Signaline detector anyheat, anywhere. We can also do it while having the least ecological impact.
To learn more about these changes or to find out more about Signaline can be your first line in fire detection please call +44 1252 725257 or email sales@lgmproducts.com

This prestigious event, known for highlighting the latest advancements and breakthroughs in the industry, provides an exceptional platform for Signaline to demonstrate its cutting-edge solutions.
Signaline has been selected to present our range of Signaline FT cables and their critical use for early fire detection within conveyor and PV arrays (solar) systems.
Dao Hong Tam, from our partners Fast Fire and Security, will be addressing the audience at the Innovation stage on Friday 16th August 2024 at 10.50am.
Why choose Signaline FT Linear heat detection?
Linear heat detection is a method used to detect heat or fire along a linear path, such as in car parks, solar panels, tunnels or conveyor belts. It works by using a heat-sensitive cable that detects changes in temperature. When the cable reaches a certain temperature, it triggers an alarm or activates a fire suppression system.
Ms Tam will be explaining what Signaline FT is and why it is the ideal solution for conveyor belts and PV arrays (solar) applications.
Why use linear heat detection in conveyor belts?
Conveyor belt systems often carry flammable materials such as coal. Dust and small pieces of material fall from the moving belt and accumulate at the sides of the conveyor.
This settled dust provides a ready source of combustible material. The main source of ignition of the accumulated material is friction in the roller bearings caused by gritty particles of dust around a roller or the belt itself.
Signaline FT Linear heat detection provides early detection should overheating occur and can be easily installed in all conveyor systems with suitable fixing clips.
Available with both nylon and stainless steel coatings the cable will not be affected by the corrosive or mechanical risk within the conveyorbelt and linked with the LocatorPlus, Signaline Linear Heat Detection will give an exact alarm point location.
Why use Signaline in PV Arrays (solar) installations?
PV panels and associated electrical equipment pose specific fire risks that need to be addressed for proper fire safety in PV installations. PV systems generate electrical power from sunlight through the use of solar panels, which produce direct current (DC) electricity.
This DC power needs to be converted to alternating current (AC) for use in buildings or the grid.
However, the conversion process and the presence of electrical components increase the risk of fire. Faulty wiring, overheating inverters, and inadequate surge protection can lead to electrical malfunctions and potential fire hazards.
Signaline Linear heat detection is a specialized technology used to detect heat or sudden increases in temperature along a cable’s entire length. In the context of PV systems, linear heat detection plays a crucial role in detecting and preventing fires.
Unlike conventional fire alarm systems, which rely on individual spot detectors, linear heat detection provides continuous monitoring and early warning capabilities. This technology operates based on a fixed temperature threshold, triggering an alarm when the specified temperature is reached.
By promptly detecting and alerting to potential fire hazards, linear heat detection ensures prompt response and minimizes the risk of damage in PV systems.
So come to the Secutech Innovation Stage on Friday 16th August and learn how Signaline can increase your fire safety standards.

The Challenge – the team will aim to climb the height of the tallest mountain in the Kahramanmaraş region of Turkey where the earthquake damage has been done.
Mount Ahır is 2,344m high, and our aim will be to surpass that number across a day of climbing at Blue Spider Climbing, Guildford, UK.
Most of the team are completely new to climbing, and so having to climb over 334m each during the day will be physically exhausting.
LGM have friends and customers in Turkey, and we are determined to help where we can.

On New Year’s Eve 2017 the fire within the multi-storey car park at the Echo Arena, Liverpool, reached over 1000C. 1,400 cars were destroyed and a year later it was decided that the structural damage to the building was to severe so the car park would be demolished.
Although it is estimated that over £20 million worth of damage was caused thankfully no lives were lost. The reason for such a devastating blaze; a car caught fire on the 3rd floor.
There is no doubt the fire risk posed by multi-storey and underground car parks. Even in the world of electric vehicles, the fire risk has reduced but not gone away. (London’s Fire Brigade alone were called to 102 electric vehicle fires in 2021)
Unlike many other risks within the building, car park areas cannot be reliably monitored for the early stages of fire by point type smoke detectors or smoke sampling systems due to the high incidence of unwanted alarms caused by vehicle exhaust emissions and moisture within car parks.
Signaline FT is used in the Trafalgar Street Car Park Brighton
Signaline Linear Heat Detection provides an excellent solution. The detection cable is not affected by the atmospheric conditions and can be installed so every car parking space is directly under the detection cable.
The Signaline FT-EN Linear Heat Detection cables’ performance are not impacted by enviornmental conditions. Signaline FT-EN also incorporates an alarm point distance locator and integrated test switches to the End of Line unit.
The LocatorPlus-EN allows 2 zones of Signaline FT-EN to be installed, each upto 1km of cable. This allows large car parks to be covered using just a single controller. The controller also provides a Modbus output allowing the building operator to integrate the linear heat detection directly with the building management systems.
Signaline FT-EN is used extensively across Europe
The integrated test switches in the Signaline FT-EOL-EN also allow for two zones, thereby reducing product costs but also enable easy ongoing maintenance.
It was these attributes, amongst others, that has got Signaline FT-EN selected for use in various car park projects across Europe, including this one in the Netherlands.
LocatorPlus-EN can easily be monitored using addressable interfaces.
Integration with other systems is also simple given that the low power consumption of the Signaline FT-EN system means that the LocatorPlus-EN and linear heat detection can be powered directly off the loop when an addressable fire detection system is being used.

With a climate crisis upon us and a need to find suitable power solutions at a lower carbon cost, many are looking to solar to fulfil, not just the next generation of energy needs, but today’s needs as well.
This exciting transition to renewables also presents new fire risks.
Solar panel fires can be caused by panels short circuiting, poor maintenance, damage from debris, or over heating. A recent BRE analysis suggested that system design or poor installation can also create significant fire risks.
Panels are often roof mounted meaning that an overheating solar panel can lead to catastrophic fire event. Like the recent Amazon warehouse fires in the USA.
Furthermore, solar is also used domestically to supplement or replace mains electrical supply. This can lead to increased risk of domestic damage, as a recent fire on a block of flats in Hampshire, UK, demonstrated.
Nonetheless, solar’s advantages of low-cost and green energy are benefits that cannot be ignored.
Therefore it is imperative that the fire risks are assessed on any new solar panel project.
Signaline Linear Heat Detection has been working within the solar market for some time now and can offer a simple and cost affective solution for fire detection of small domestic solar solutions all the way to large solar farm power plants.
Signaline Linear Heat Detection are weather resistant and maintenance free, and can be installed in close proximity to the panels and therefore provide quick and reliable detection of any over heating.
The system is easy to incorporate into wider fire detection systems. Alternatively, it can also be used as a ‘standalone’ heat detector, signalling to the solar panel controller directly. This input can be used to activate automatic shut down and stop any further power running to the panels.
In larger applications, such as solar farms, the Signaline LocatorPlus can be used to help identify the exact alarm location of the fire. This will enable first responders to quickly and affectively attend to a fire event.
For further information about our solutions please see our in-depth application notes in a downloadable PDF format on our application page.

Signaline has always strived to offer the best and most suitable fixing solutions to secure our linear heat detection. In certain applications this is not always so easy!
In areas where there are no easy fixing place or there maybe obstacles on the ceiling, securing the linear heat detection cable can be problematic.
Signaline Catenary Wire is available as an optional addition to any of the Signaline Linear Heat Detection cables.
Signaline Catenary Wire aids in installing Signaline linear heat detection cables in areas which may be difficult to access, have large spans to cover or fixing the cable at the normal recommended spacing (up to 1.5m / 5ft intervals) would be too difficult or time consuming.
The catenary wire is spiralled around the cable and makes the detector cable self-supporting.
A turnbuckle hook and support is sold separately to complete the installation.
For further information please call our sales team on +44 1252 725257 or email on sales@lgmproducts.com

Costs caused by not recognising the beginnings of a fire in a power station can quickly run to the millions.
Fire damage in secondary areas can also cause prolonged down time and add to ongoing running costs.
This is not to mention the possible loss to life should a catastrophic fire develop.
Power stations contain different operating and functional areas creating a complex site.
Therefore integration of an affective and fast fire detection system is crucial in the design of any power plant.
In 2019 Masinloc Power Partners Co, bought online their 335Mw power station in Masinloc, The Philippines.
The design of the fire system was paramount to the overall operation of the power station.
The power station is situated on a coastal site allowing for the coal to be deposited directly from the dock side. The coal is then needed to be taken from this store into the power plant itself. A 2km series of conveyors was assembled to achieve this.
The conveyor system employed Signaline Linear Heat detection throughout to detect any overheating section.
The Signaline FT-R range is particularly suited for this application as it allows for long single zones of line type heat detection.
It is also highly sensitive for close area overheating, like those found within conveyor systems.
The Signaline LocatorPlus will also identify the alarm location to the extinguishing system. Allowing for quick identification to the exact area of over heating before a fire develops.
Areas processing coal are also designated hazardous areas.
Signaline FT-R is deemed ‘simple aparatus’ meaning it is not at risk of being a source of ignition for the hazardous area.
However, the cable must be protected by an intrinsically safe barrier to ensure this safety.
With vast knowledge of hazardous area signalling, and 30+ years of offering approved solutions, LGM was also called upon to provide hazardous area notification devices.
In this instance the UL, ATEX and IECEX approved D1XC1X05F was selected.
The D1X units employ the latest electronic technology and acoustic engineering in robust, marine grade, LM6 aluminium enclosures. Ensuring complete sound coverage and 360° warning illumination.

Recent catastrophic car park fires, such as the Liverpool Arena fire in 2017, have once again highlighted the essential requirement for having approved and efficient fire detection systems within car parks.
However, due to the difficult environmental conditions found in car parks it is not easy for many traditional fire detectors to perform well in these areas.
Signaline FT-EN is a new range of EN54 Part 28 approved linear heat detectors that are designed to mitigate such environmental issues. With a newly developed corrosive resistant outer coating Signaline FT-EN is impervious to difficult atmospheric conditions.
The Signaline FT-EN range was selected to protect the underground car park at a City Hall in the western region of the Netherlands.
With a quick alarm reaction and easy installation, the Signaline FT-78-EN, was the perfect solution.
Signaline FT-EN cables report to the Signaline LocatorPlus-EN controller which shows exact alarm location along the cable and is easily to integrated onto addressable fire system to report fire and faults. In this case an Apollo XP95 Loop was used and an addressable interfaced incorporated for power as well as monitoring fire and fault outputs from the LocatorPlus-EN.
Testing is also very easy with the Signaline FT-EN range as integrated test and fault buttons are in the FT-EOL-EN.
Rienk Leenstra, Aerocheck BV, commented ‘Setting up the system was very easy and testing with the EOL works like a charm’
To learn more about using Signaline Linear Heat Detection within car parks please visit our applications guide here, or to see the Signaline FT-EN product range please click here.
