Photovoltaic (PV) systems, also known as solar PV panels, have gained popularity as a renewable energy source. These systems convert sunlight into electricity using semiconductor materials. While PV systems offer numerous benefits, it is crucial to consider fire safety measures to prevent potential hazards.

There is a need to rethink PV systems as generators. Building standards make allowance for fire detection and safety if your building incorporates a gas or diesel generator. Therefore, we need to consider the same risk for PV systems as these too are large generators of power.

And given that 97% of solar installations have been found to have significant fire risks, what if your biggest fire risk was not in your building but on your building?

Signaline Linear Heat Detection is a specialized technology that plays a vital role in PV fire safety.

It is designed to detect and provide early warning of fire hazards in PV installations. Unlike conventional fire alarm systems, which rely on spot detectors, linear heat detection can sense temperature changes along its entire length.

This blog aims to simplify PV fire safety by providing an overview of linear heat detection and its implementation in PV systems. We will explore the common causes of PV system fires, the role of environmental factors, and the benefits of using linear heat detection technology.

Additionally, we will delve into the planning, design, and installation considerations for implementing linear heat detection in PV installations. Compliance and standards for PV fire safety will also be discussed, along with case studies highlighting the success of linear heat detection in preventing PV system fires.

By understanding the importance of linear heat detection and its application in PV systems, we can enhance fire safety measures and ensure the reliable and efficient operation of solar PV panels.

Understanding PV Fire Risks

PV panels and associated electrical equipment pose specific fire risks that need to be addressed for proper fire safety in PV installations. PV systems generate electrical power from sunlight through the use of solar panels, which produce direct current (DC) electricity.

This DC power needs to be converted to alternating current (AC) for use in buildings or the grid.

However, the conversion process and the presence of electrical components increase the risk of fire. Faulty wiring, overheating inverters, and inadequate surge protection can lead to electrical malfunctions and potential fire hazards.

The Clean Energy Association, while conducting extensive research, discovered that 97% of audited PV systems had major fire concerns.

It is essential to implement suitable fire safety measures to mitigate these risks and protect both the PV system and the surrounding environment.

The Role of Environmental Factors in PV Fire Safety

Environmental factors play a significant role in PV fire safety.

Direct sunlight, which is necessary for solar energy production, can also contribute to the risk of fires in PV systems. The heat generated by the sunlight can increase the temperature of electrical components, potentially leading to malfunctions and fires.

Other environmental factors, such as the presence of flammable materials or the accumulation of dust and debris on the panels, can further enhance the fire risk. It is essential to consider these environmental factors when designing and implementing fire safety measures in PV installations.

Signaline Linear heat detection, with its ability to detect heat along the entire length of a cable, is a reliable solution for mitigating the impact of these environmental factors on PV fire safety.

Introduction to Linear Heat Detection in PV Systems

Signaline Linear heat detection is a specialized technology used to detect heat or sudden increases in temperature along a cable’s entire length. In the context of PV systems, linear heat detection plays a crucial role in detecting and preventing fires.

Unlike conventional fire alarm systems, which rely on individual spot detectors, linear heat detection provides continuous monitoring and early warning capabilities. This technology operates based on a fixed temperature threshold, triggering an alarm when the specified temperature is reached.

By promptly detecting and alerting to potential fire hazards, linear heat detection ensures prompt response and minimizes the risk of damage in PV systems.

How Linear Heat Detection Works

FT-EN range of EN54 approved linear heat detectors

Linear heat detection works by utilizing a specialized cable that is sensitive to changes in temperature. When the temperature in the vicinity of the cable exceeds a specified threshold, the cable undergoes a change in its electrical characteristics. This change triggers an alarm signal, indicating the presence of a potential fire.

The alarm signal is typically connected to a fire control panel or other monitoring systems, enabling prompt response and necessary actions. By continuously monitoring the temperature along its entire length, linear heat detection offers reliable and early detection of potential fire hazards in PV systems.

Benefits of Using Linear Heat Detection for PV Systems

Using linear heat detection in PV systems offers several advantages in terms of fire safety and overall system reliability. Some of the key benefits include:

Early detection: Linear heat detection provides continuous monitoring and early detection of potential fire hazards, enabling swift response and minimizing the risk of damage.

Reliability: Linear heat detection cables are highly reliable and can withstand harsh environmental conditions, ensuring long-term performance and minimal false alarms.

Efficiency: By detecting heat along the entire length of the cable, linear heat detection minimizes the risk of undetected fires and allows for targeted fire suppression actions.

Environmental suitability: Signaline has often been used for environmentally harsh conditions. PV systems need to withstand continuous UV, seasonal temperature variations and possible debris damage. Signaline is highly resilient to all these factors.

Planning and Design Considerations

Signaline FT-105-R was used to protect large solar array in Turkey

When planning and designing a linear heat detection system for PV installations, several considerations need to be taken into account. These include:

Selecting suitable cable type: Choosing the appropriate linear heat detection cable based on the installation environment and the specific requirements of the PV system. Our recommendation is that the cable installed should have an alarm temperature 20°C above maximum ambient temperature.

Ensuring proper cable routing: Properly routing the linear heat detection cable to cover the targeted areas, ensuring comprehensive coverage and effective detection. It is recommended to run a line of Signaline Linear heat detection across the back of every run of panels.

Integration with fire alarm systems: Coordinating the linear heat detection system with the overall fire alarm system to enable centralized monitoring, alerts, and response capabilities. Thankfully Signaline is compatible with all types of commercial fire detection systems and can conform to UL, FM and EN standards.

Compliance and Standards for PV Fire Safety

At time of writing, the UK, EU or US are yet to establish governing regulations for fire detection specifically within PV Systems.

However, leading global insurance firms have been conducting their own research and have concluded that Linear Heat Detection is a highly suitable technology to detect over heating PV systems.

In 2023 FM Global released their ‘Property Loss Prevention Data Sheet’ for roof-mounted solar photovoltaic panels. Herein, the use of Linear Heat Detection was called upon;

‘. . . installations where combustible construction is unavoidable, consider the installation of FM Approved, linear heat detection on top of the roof cover and below the PV modules. One line of heat detection can be placed within each sun-facing or east-west facing row of PV panels’

Similarly, this year Zurich Insurance Group, released their own study into the risk and mitigation thereof within PV Systems.

As with FM their research clearly pointed towards Linear Heat Detection as one of the view suitable technologies to provide efficient fire and cost-effective fire detection for roof top PV Systems.

These independent results point clearly towards Linear Heat Detection to be the correct choice for increased fire safety standards within roof mounted PV systems.

Conclusion

Signaline Linear heat detection is a crucial component in enhancing PV fire safety. By understanding the risks associated with PV systems, implementing linear heat detection technology, and adhering to compliance standards, you can significantly reduce the chances of fire incidents.

With proper planning, design, and installation practices, linear heat detection offers a reliable solution for early fire detection in PV installations. These technologies play a vital role in safeguarding PV systems, contributing to overall fire prevention success.

On New Year’s Eve 2017 the fire within the multi-storey car park at the Echo Arena, Liverpool, reached over 1000C. 1,400 cars were destroyed and a year later it was decided that the structural damage to the building was to severe so the car park would be demolished.

Although it is estimated that over £20 million worth of damage was caused thankfully no lives were lost. The reason for such a devastating blaze; a car caught fire on the 3rd floor.

There is no doubt the fire risk posed by multi-storey and underground car parks. Even in the world of electric vehicles, the fire risk has reduced but not gone away. (London’s Fire Brigade alone were called to 102 electric vehicle fires in 2021)

Unlike many other risks within the building, car park areas cannot be reliably monitored for the early stages of fire by point type smoke detectors or smoke sampling systems due to the high incidence of unwanted alarms caused by vehicle exhaust emissions and moisture within car parks.

Signaline FT is used in the Trafalgar Street Car Park Brighton

Signaline Linear Heat Detection provides an excellent solution. The detection cable is not affected by the atmospheric conditions and can be installed so every car parking space is directly under the detection cable.

Benefits like this led to Signaline FT being selected for fire detection with the Trafalgar Street Car Park in Brighton.

More recently, and with the launch of the award winning Signaline FT-EN range in 2020 the EN54 part 28 product has been the product of choice.

The Signaline FT-EN Linear Heat Detection cables’ performance are not impacted by enviornmental conditions. Signaline FT-EN also incorporates an alarm point distance locator and integrated test switches to the End of Line unit.

The LocatorPlus-EN allows 2 zones of Signaline FT-EN to be installed, each upto 1km of cable. This allows large car parks to be covered using just a single controller. The controller also provides a Modbus output allowing the building operator to integrate the linear heat detection directly with the building management systems.

Signaline FT-EN is used extensively across Europe

The integrated test switches in the Signaline FT-EOL-EN also allow for two zones, thereby reducing product costs but also enable easy ongoing maintenance.

It was these attributes, amongst others, that has got Signaline FT-EN selected for use in various car park projects across Europe, including this one in the Netherlands.

LocatorPlus-EN can easily be monitored using addressable interfaces.

Integration with other systems is also simple given that the low power consumption of the Signaline FT-EN system means that the LocatorPlus-EN and linear heat detection can be powered directly off the loop when an addressable fire detection system is being used.

There has been A LOT of discussion about UKCA marking of products since its annoucement in December 2020. Not least, the implimentation date of 1st January 2023 has been hotly contested and only this month the final deadline has been push back to 1st January 2025

But here at Signaline we like to get on with things!

So we are pleased to announce that Signaline has now completed UKCA conformance across our range.

Starting in December 2022, Signaline FT-EN will be the first product to be marked with UKCA logo (as shown). The LocatorPlus-EN and FT-EOL-EN will now come with the UKCA logo alongside the UL EU approval stamp and the CE marking.

Signaline FT-78-EN and Signaline FT-88-EN Linear heat detectors will also carry the UKCA conformity but the cable itself will not be marked. The conformity symbol will instead appear on the reel label.

After this transition, the LocatorPlus and the Signaline FT Linear Heat Detector ranges will also follow.

Obtaining UKCA once again shows Signaline’s commitment to product approvals and conformance.

With a climate crisis upon us and a need to find suitable power solutions at a lower carbon cost, many are looking to solar to fulfil, not just the next generation of energy needs, but today’s needs as well.

This exciting transition to renewables also presents new fire risks.

Solar panel fires can be caused by panels short circuiting, poor maintenance, damage from debris, or over heating. A recent BRE analysis suggested that system design or poor installation can also create significant fire risks.

Panels are often roof mounted meaning that an overheating solar panel can lead to catastrophic fire event. Like the recent Amazon warehouse fires in the USA.

Furthermore, solar is also used domestically to supplement or replace mains electrical supply. This can lead to increased risk of domestic damage, as a recent fire on a block of flats in Hampshire, UK, demonstrated.

Nonetheless, solar’s advantages of low-cost and green energy are benefits that cannot be ignored.

Therefore it is imperative that the fire risks are assessed on any new solar panel project.

Signaline Linear Heat Detection has been working within the solar market for some time now and can offer a simple and cost affective solution for fire detection of small domestic solar solutions all the way to large solar farm power plants.

Signaline Linear Heat Detection are weather resistant and maintenance free, and can be installed in close proximity to the panels and therefore provide quick and reliable detection of any over heating.

The system is easy to incorporate into wider fire detection systems. Alternatively, it can also be used as a ‘standalone’ heat detector, signalling to the solar panel controller directly. This input can be used to activate automatic shut down and stop any further power running to the panels.

In larger applications, such as solar farms, the Signaline LocatorPlus can be used to help identify the exact alarm location of the fire. This will enable first responders to quickly and affectively attend to a fire event.

For further information about our solutions please see our in-depth application notes in a downloadable PDF format on our application page.

Or why not come and speak to us in person as to how we can resolve your solar risks!

We will be exhibiting at Solar and Storage 2022 on the 18th-20th October at the NEC, Birmingham, as well as participating in the WETEX Dubai Solar Show 2022 on the 27th-29th September.

Signaline has always strived to offer the best and most suitable fixing solutions to secure our linear heat detection. In certain applications this is not always so easy!

In areas where there are no easy fixing place or there maybe obstacles on the ceiling, securing the linear heat detection cable can be problematic.

Signaline Catenary Wire neatly resolves this issue.

Signaline Catenary Wire is available as an optional addition to any of the Signaline Linear Heat Detection cables.

Signaline Catenary Wire aids in installing Signaline linear heat detection cables in areas which may be difficult to access, have large spans to cover or fixing the cable at the normal recommended spacing (up to 1.5m / 5ft intervals) would be too difficult or time consuming.

The catenary wire is spiralled around the cable and makes the detector cable self-supporting.

A turnbuckle hook and support is sold separately to complete the installation.

For further information please call our sales team on +44 1252 725257 or  email on sales@lgmproducts.com

Signaline is delight to launch the new 2022 Brochure. Complete with all the latest updates.

The new 2022 addition will be the first to include our market leading EN54 part 22 approved Signaline FT-EN range. Signaline FT-EN, is a fixed temperature linear heat detection cable. Signaline FT-EN comes in 78˚C or 88˚C alarm temperatures and is complete with alarm location controller.

As well as the Signaline FT-EN we are please now offer stainless-steel braiding across all Signaline linear heat detection. This braid is made up of multiple SS316 wires ensuring the cable has exceptionally high mechanical protection, making it an incredibly robust heat detector and ideal for harsh environments such as conveyors, escalators and engine bays.

2021 saw the launch of the new catenary wire product. This product attaches a fixed steel wire to the Signaline Linear Heat Detector and therefore allows the detection cable to be ‘suspended’ from the steel cable. This solution is perfect in areas were there is no easy fixings position, partitioned ceilings, or simply you are looking to speed up installation and reduce costs.

Signaline WATER has also been enhanced! The updated Signaline WDM-KM now comes in a better enclosure with IP rated terminals rather than flying leads. This allows for quicker installation and better protection from water ingress.

To download a copy of the brochure please click here.

Signaline is pleased to announce the addition of new stainless steel braided cables and clips!

Signaline has always offered a highly corrosive and UV resistant range of Linear Heat Detection Cables. However, in some applications you need to only offer uv and chemical protection but also mechanical protection.

In these applications we can offer any of our Signaline FT-EN or FT cables with a braided stainless steel outer coating. The standard cable has an additional SS316L braid weaved around it to ensure the highest level of mechanical protection.

The result is an immensely strong and durable linear heat detector that can be placed into areas were the cable maybe subject to mechanical damage.

Alongside the new stainless steel option we also now can offer two new stainless steel fixing clips; the L Clip and the V Clip

Both made of SS316 grade stainless steel, these new clips can be used in the harshest of conditions and offer a robust and reliable fixing for Signaline Linear Heat detectors. Easy to install and with no maintenance required these new clips will ensure you complete your Signaline Linear Heat Detection solution with confidence.

Costs caused by not recognising the beginnings of a fire in a power station can quickly run to the millions.

Fire damage in secondary areas can also cause prolonged down time and add to ongoing running costs.

This is not to mention the possible loss to life should a catastrophic fire develop.

Power stations contain different operating and functional areas creating a complex site.

Therefore integration of an affective and fast fire detection system is crucial in the design of any power plant.

In 2019 Masinloc Power Partners Co, bought online their 335Mw power station in Masinloc, The Philippines.

The design of the fire system was paramount to the overall operation of the power station.

The power station is situated on a coastal site allowing for the coal to be deposited directly from the dock side. The coal is then needed to be taken from this store into the power plant itself. A 2km series of conveyors was assembled to achieve this.

The conveyor system employed Signaline Linear Heat detection throughout to detect any overheating section.

The Signaline FT-R range is particularly suited for this application as it allows for long single zones of line type heat detection.

It is also highly sensitive for close area overheating, like those found within conveyor systems.

The Signaline LocatorPlus will also identify the alarm location to the extinguishing system. Allowing for quick identification to the exact area of over heating before a fire develops.

Areas processing coal are also designated hazardous areas.

Signaline FT-R is deemed ‘simple aparatus’ meaning it is not at risk of being a source of ignition for the hazardous area.

However, the cable must be protected by an intrinsically safe barrier to ensure this safety.

Thankfully the integeration of the barriers is quite simple and makes Signaline FT-R safe for use in hazardous locations.

With vast knowledge of hazardous area signalling, and 30+ years of offering approved solutions, LGM was also called upon to provide hazardous area notification devices.

In this instance the UL, ATEX and IECEX approved D1XC1X05F was selected.

The D1X units employ the latest electronic technology and acoustic engineering in robust, marine grade, LM6 aluminium enclosures. Ensuring complete sound coverage and 360° warning illumination.

Recent catastrophic car park fires, such as the Liverpool Arena fire in 2017, have once again highlighted the essential requirement for having approved and efficient fire detection systems within car parks.

However, due to the difficult environmental conditions found in car parks it is not easy for many traditional fire detectors to perform well in these areas.

Signaline FT-EN is a new range of EN54 Part 28 approved linear heat detectors that are designed to mitigate such environmental issues. With a newly developed corrosive resistant outer coating Signaline FT-EN is impervious to difficult atmospheric conditions.

The Signaline FT-EN range was selected to protect the underground car park at a City Hall in the western region of the Netherlands.

With a quick alarm reaction and easy installation, the Signaline FT-78-EN, was the perfect solution.

Signaline FT-EN cables report to the Signaline LocatorPlus-EN controller which shows exact alarm location along the cable and is easily to integrated onto addressable fire system to report fire and faults. In this case an Apollo XP95 Loop was used and an addressable interfaced incorporated for power as well as monitoring fire and fault outputs from the LocatorPlus-EN.

Testing is also very easy with the Signaline FT-EN range as integrated test and fault buttons are in the  FT-EOL-EN.

Rienk Leenstra, Aerocheck BV, commented ‘Setting up the system was very easy and testing with the EOL works like a charm’

To learn more about using Signaline Linear Heat Detection within car parks please visit our applications guide here, or to see the Signaline FT-EN product range please  click here.

As a global society we have all come to feel the impact of the Corona Virus. It is a very real threat but with the correct preventative measures the full impact can be avoided and the virus killed.

Like all businesses LGM has implemented special measures to ensure the safety of our employees and the continuation of business activities.

Therefore, we are pleased to say LGM Products is still open for business and here to fulfil orders, support technical queries and questions and continue supporting our clients.

To enable this LGM has –

·       Enabled all sales, technical and finance teams to work from home. They have full access to all systems and therefore can continue to provide the level of support LGM is known for

·       Warehouse operations have been altered so no member of staff are working in the same area and mostly on different floors of the building so zero contact between them is required

·       Implemented a strict and enforced work-station disinfection schedule for those still in our facility

·       All common areas that come into human contact, such as handrails, door handles, kitchens, bathrooms etc. are disinfected on a regular schedule

·       All on site meetings have now been cancelled, postponed or moved to e-meetings

·       Issued all employees with hand sanitizer and access to face masks

·       Altered logistics operation procedures to avoid any colleagues coming into direct contact with external logistics personnel

While we are trying to limit the impact these new procedures have on service levels, we place the health and well being of our staff and community first and therefore this may lead to some disruptions or delays to customer orders. For this we apologise for any inconvenience, but also know that our customers understand that LGM’s first priority is to fight this threat.

LGM has always enjoyed great relationships with our customers and suppliers and we’re in this together as one team.

We will respond as the situation develops and will update our customers as necessary. We wish you all the very best and ask you to take similar special measures to stay safe and to stay healthy.
